14 Jan 2025: Selkirk B v Kelso;   Selkirk Championship

Kelso were visitors to the Town Arms on Tuesday, and came away winners by 3½ to ½.  There was a signinficant grading disparity between the teams (average 329 in Kelso's favour on the top two boards) but the whole Selkirk team fought well and there were no one-sided games.

On board 1 John Moore got off to a flying start when Keith Aitchison gifted him a Bishop; but Keith is an experienced and imaginative player, and after a serious fightback the players agreed a draw. Board 2 saw a tough battle in the Sicilian between Ian Thompson and Ian Whittaker, with Ian eventually overcoming the Selkirk man.   On board 3 Kelso's Alan Armstrong encountered strong resistance from Tam Wylie, with Tam eventually losing on time.  Finally, a knife edge battle between George Birbeck and Selkirk debutant Harry Cornwell ended in favour of the Kelso No 4.  A very good match despite the scoreline, where all eight players can have taken some encouragement from their games.

Draw for Borders Individual Minor

The draw for the third round of BICC Minor is now ready, and can be found on the BICC Matches page. Unfortunately Ali Gray has had to withdraw from all chess for quite a while, following a nasty back injury. Best wishes to Ali, and we hope to see him back as soon as his recovery is complete.

Selkirk Championship: 14 Jan 2025

One game was played on Tuesday, when Kevin Poulton (White) won against Bill Miller in a close and well-contested game.  In doing so, Kevin overcame a 538 point deficit -  and may well be the Border League's giant killer of the season.  After a shaky start to the Championship, Kevin now moves to a healthier 2 points.
